Halesowen pet store warns against buying bunnies

A HALESOWEN pet store is backing a campaign discouraging the giving of live rabbits as Easter gifts.

The Make Mine Chocolate campaign is asking pet stores to give people who want to buy bunnies chocolate rabbits instead along with a leaflet explaining why not to buy a bunny for Easter.

It is being supported by The Big Pet Store in Hereward Rise.

Manager Darren said: “Rabbits are the most neglected animal in Britain.

“Some large pet stores buy them at bulk prices through the post to cater for the demand over Easter, yet our local rescue centre has a waiting list to take bunnies from people who don't want them anymore.

“They are sold in cages not big enough for hamsters and forgotten about in such a short time.”

Darren said the store does not sell rabbits at any time of year.

What Darren neglects to mention is that barely a year ago, the store certainly did sell rabbits, guinea pigs, etc., and still does sell small rodents.

The reason we stopped selling rabbits is because we couldnt find anymore suitable homes, we only sold 2 rabbits a month, from a local breeder, all our rodents we do sell are either bred by us or locally, and only go to people who understand how much work is involved and have a suitable cage. We dont jump on a bandwagon however and sell them for a 'commercial' period such as easter.
