Halesowen schoolboy out for a spin

A MOTORBIKE-mad disabled student at a Halesowen school took time out of the classroom for a spin round the town on a unique custom-built trike.
Twelve-year-old Liam Kumar suffers from the muscle wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy and will never be able to ride a standard motorcycle.
But the young enthusiast from The Earls High School was treated to a special ride courtesy of Solihull trike owner John Murphy, a customer of Halesowen’s Streetbike motorcycle centre.
He was given a special escort by motorcycle fanatics, teachers Mark Wild and Sarah Reynolds and school technician Bill Whittaker along with Carl Dodds from Streetbike.
His year eight classmates even made chequered flags to wave him back into school and special needs co-ordinator Stuart Berry said Liam enjoyed all the fuss.
“He doesn’t get that many opportunities like this, so it was great for him. He was really excited about it,” said Mr Berry.
Liam, who is wheelchair-bound and has lost the use of his forearms. was also presented with a Streetbike goody bag to remember the occasion.
Mr Berry added design and technology technician Mr Whittaker had contacted Streetbike who came up trumps in helping fulfil Liam’s dream.
