Sunday the 19th October will see 4 nurses from Mary Stevens Hospice realise a feat they never thought possible; to run the 13.1 mile Birmingham half marathon.

The 4 nurses wanted to give something back to the organisation that collectively they have been working for, for 30 years.

When asked how they came to the idea of this challenge Claire Towns, head or nursing said: “It was a spur of the moment decision whilst sat in a Jacuzzi that has led myself and 3 other nurses to commit to running the half marathon. None of us have ever run before but as a team we have all started a 30 week training programme in preparation. As nurses we are all passionate about the difference we can make to people’s lives through the care we give at Mary Stevens Hospice. We are running the half-marathon for all the people we have cared for and to raise essential funds to allow us to continue to provide care to our patients and their families”.

The Nurses are looking to raise enough funds to replace as many of the specialist mattresses used for the patients as possible; currently costing £3000.00 each they are a very important piece of equipment but also expensive. Claire Said “The mattresses are an important part of the care we give, knowing that our patients are as comfortable as we can possible make them is part of our role, and having such specialist equipment really helps us to deliver that service.”

The girls all hope to complete the distance together and will be ready for a long lie down at the end. If you wish to sponsor the nurses for their challenge please call the fundraising team on 01384 377778.
