AN ARMY veteran from Worcester who overcame cancer to become a prolific fundraiser will complete the Blind Veterans UK 100km challenge next year.

Andrew Graham, 51, of St John’s, was given only three months to live after being diagnosed with terminal throat, mouth and jaw cancer in 2002.

But he has since completed dozens of marathons and in June this year finished Blind Veterans UK’s 100km trek from London to Brighton in 21 hours and 35 minutes.

He will follow this up by taking on the 2015 event, which has now opened for registration with an early bird discount and will take place on June 6 and 7.

Mr Graham, who served in the Royal Green Jackets between 1980 and 1987, said: “As an ultra-runner it’s such a wonderful feeling doing events you enjoy and are challenged by in order to raise money for great causes like Blind Veterans UK.

“If you are into endurance challenges, sign up and put yourself to the test.

“The 100km is an amazing experience, walking with hundreds of people all doing the event to support Blind Veterans UK.

“There was a great sense of camaraderie – I met up with a group of young walkers who are serving in the Army, so we had a laugh and supported each other to the finish line.”

Blind Veterans UK has stated the 2015 event, which will include both 50km and 100km route options, will be bigger and better than ever before.

The charity, which celebrates a centenary of service in 2015, provides blind and vision impaired ex-service personnel with lifelong support including rehabilitation, training, welfare support, residential and respite care.

It needs 500 people to take part in the 100km challenge in order to continue providing a lifetime's practical and emotional support to more than 3,900 veterans, regardless of when they served and how they lost their sight.
