SEVERAL sports clubs in Droitwich have teamed up in a bid to support and develop sporting activities in the town and surrounding areas.

The King George V Sports Community Interest Company Ltd has been formed at the request of Wychavon District Council, and comprises four of the town’s sports clubs, Droitwich Spa Veterans Football Club, Droitwich Spa Open Age Football Club, Droitwich Spa Boy and Girls Football Club, and Droitwich Spa Hockey Club.

Other clubs and local organisations will hopefully be brought into the company as associate members in the future.

Richard Whittall, who is serving as the independent chairman for the new company, said: “The initial aim is to work with the district council and replace the astro pitch behind the sports centre and to have at least one 3G football pitch built which most of the surrounding towns already have.

“Due to the increased usage this will create we intend to raise the funds to refurbish the pavilion and changing rooms and create a function room that can be used for all organisations, and can then be used as a centre by the whole community.

“Moving forward support will be provided to the sporting community with coaching development, improved equipment where possible and the continuation of improving local facilities for all sporting clubs and activities in the area.

“We are already talking to local businesses about initial fundraising support and then medium to long term partnerships, and so far receiving a very positive response.”

Support for the company is already being provided by several local authorities, Worcestershire Football Association, Sport UK, Sports Partnership Worcestershire and Hereford, and the ECB.

Richard Whittall added that the company would like to make Droitwich Spa a centre of excellence for sport, with the support of the local authorities, clubs, associations and the community as a whole.

The new company will have a stand at the St. Richard’s Festival on Saturday, May 2, the Food Festival on Saturday, June 20, and the Hill Climb in, and people are welcome to come along and find out more.
