AMERICAN diner Detroit's has closed down according to a message on its website and voicemail.

The restaurant in Castle Street, which was once a car showroom, closed its doors for the final time on Saturday after five years.

A message on its website reads: "After taking the decision not to renew our lease; as of Saturday 21st May 2016, Detroit's is closed.

"We'd like to thank the hundreds of thousands of you that enjoyed our, over the top, American experience.

"The biggest thank you ever goes out to the staff and management that worked so hard over our five year journey.

"Take care, goodbye..."

The answerphone at the restaurant has a message telling customers it is not renewing its lease and is now closed down.

"We would like to wish our customers a thank you and our staff for all their hard work. Thank you to everyone. Take care."

In 2014, plans to allow it to open until 12.30am seven days a week were thrown out.

The last review for the restaurant on TripAdvisor by user BizzyLizzy1 is entitled Goodbye Detroits! Will miss you all!.

They wrote: "I'm very sad that this place has closed down.

"I am local to this restaurant and have visited it many times and loved it each time.

"The 50s decor was wonderful as was the quality of food (huge too!). The staff were so lovely too.

"I have a sneaky suspicion there was some sort of hate campaign going on.

"As a result 15 staff have lost their desperately needed jobs. Come back!!!"
