TONY Lovering has been living life in the fast lane since booking his place in the Guinness World Records after setting a new land speed record for a remote controlled car.

The oil consultant from Dark Lane in Kinver managed to record a staggering 210.11 miles per hour with a hybrid rocket powered car which he designed and built himself.

His Black Knight - named after the 1950's UK rocket programme - set the record after careering across Llanbedr Airport in North Wales and beating the previous best time set by America's Nic Case of 202.02mph

The Black Knight measures 2.4 metres in length and is powered with nitrous oxide and polyethylene hybrid rocket with a nitrogen boost of 48lbs thrust for 10 seconds.

Tony said: "I'm ecstatic! I've been trying to break the land speed record for the past two years. I designed and built the car in 2010 and I've held the record before but Nic was the first to break the 200-mile barrier and it's just great to hold the title now."

Tony has been fascinated with remote control cars since he was 10-years-old and has raced them all over the world.

But it was after watching the film "The World's Fastest Indian' that inspired him to try and break the land speed record.

He runs an organisation called ROSSA (Radio Operated Scale Speed Association) which holds world championships every year in numerous countries including Australia, the UK, USA and Bahrain.

The Association will be staging the UK Remote Control Speed Championships at the Shakespeare County Raceway near Stratford from September 16 to 18 when Tony will be running the Black Knight as a demonstration.

He said: "There are 16 different classes to compete in - but that's to encourage as many people as possible to take part. The Guinness Book of Records only recognises four types, rocket, jet, electric and IC.

"Some of the cars are so fast that it's difficult to take in. Blink and you've missed it.
