A SUPERMARKET in Worcester city centre is to close this October, it has been announced.

Co-operative supermarket in Angel Street will close its doors to the public for the last time on Saturday, October 1.

A spokesman for the firm has sent us a statement which reads: "The decision to close any store is taken with the greatest reluctance and forms part of our ongoing food strategy to deliver a compelling and convenient shopping experience for our members and customers.

"Our store in Angel Street, Worcester, will close on October 1.

"Colleagues have been informed of the decision, which is in no way a reflection on their commitment and hard work, and every effort will be made to find alternative positions.

"We would like to thank our shoppers for their valued custom.”

The Worcester News has been told that the supermarket's 26 employees were called to a meeting on Monday, (August 22), during which they were told they would be losing their jobs.

The supermarket had been facing increased competition for Worcester city centre shoppers. Earlier this year a Sainsbury's convenience store opened in Foregate Street, not far from the Tesco Express store next to Worcester Foregate station.
