A GROUP working on behalf of Worcester City Council have hailed the success of a summer activity programme for children.

Freedom Leisure’s sport, art and play development team have reported that 2,400 people took part in the 2016 multi-sport and play summer programme.

75 sessions were delivered throughout 14 local parks and community centres in Worcester over five weeks.

Hannah Cox, Freedom Leisure regional development manager, said: “We are delighted that this year’s scheme attracted so many families, play schemes and children.

“It was reported by the national press over the summer that activity levels among children can drop over the school holidays, so anything we can do to help prevent this from happening in Worcester is hugely positive!

“We would like to thank all our coaches and external providers who supported the programme this summer, along with everyone who came to the sessions.

“Without the support from organisations and locals these sessions would not be possible. We would also like to offer huge thanks to Our Happy Place Partnership for funding sessions across a number of priority wards in the city.”

The programme enabled an additional 4,000 hours of physical activity to be completed by local residents this summer.

Working on behalf of Worcester City Council and in partnership with a variety of groups, Freedom Leisure invited local children and families to get involved with a wide range of sports and play, including, kwik cricket, rugby, tennis, basketball, play, crafts and more.

The free sessions were open to 2 – 18 year olds along with their families, with play schemes tailored to suit all age ranges and abilities taking part.

Toddlers had the chance to participate in a range of play-based activities with Action for Children, including sand and water activities.

Older children had the opportunity to get active and participate in sport and play with their friends.

Qualified and experienced sports coaches from Freedom Leisure along with the Warriors Community Foundation, delivered over 13 different sports daily.

Disability Sport Worcester coaches were also able to use their expertise to support those participants with additional needs.
