COUNCILLORS are looking at the feasibility of putting a pelican crossing in Yazor Road in Hereford following a plea made by a visually-impaired resident.

Molly Leary, 19, is trying to become more independent which means she needs to navigate herself around Hereford.

In a Facebook post she said this was going well until she tried to cross Yazor Road, on the island crossing next to the mini roundabout on Grandstand Road, and found she could not cross it independently.

Molly said: "I have had hours of mobility lessons but still not managed to cross it. To try and overcome this problem I have been in touch with Herefordshire Council asking for a pelican crossing, as it not only stops my independence but also puts myself in danger."

She said that her request had been denied and shared the post on Facebook, which created a huge response with over 6,300 shares.

Herefordshire councillor, Clive Butler, for the Bobblestock ward said he has written to Balfour Beatty, who manage the highways on behalf of the council, to ask if anything can be done and whether a pelican crossing can be put in that location.

He said: "If anything does happen it would not be until next year because the budget has already been set for the year ahead."

Cllr Butler said he will also go to the site with Cllr Jim Kenyon and someone from the Royal National College for the Blind to have a look to see if it is feasible.

A Herefordshire Council spokesman said: “Cllr Butler discussed the concerns with Molly Leary on Saturday, January 14. He will direct the request through to Herefordshire Council, in partnership with Balfour Beatty Living Places, where the application will be considered.

"Currently no application has been submitted, so no decision has been made."
