PEOPLE who have what it takes to make decisions about the county's roads, adult social care or looked after children are invited to an information day.

People will get all the information they need to see if becoming a county councillor is for them at an Candidates' Day for election hopefuls.

This May, the people of Worcestershire have the chance to vote for their representative member of Worcestershire County Council.

The county council elections are due to take place on May 4, 2017 and almost anyone can put themselves forward to become a county councillor as long as they meet the criteria for becoming a councillor.

The role carries a number of responsibilities and obligations.

Candidates' Day will be held in the Council Chamber at County Hall, Worcester from 2pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday, February 28, and will include plenty of information for prospective candidates.

The agenda will be as follows:

• 2pm - Introduction by Simon Mallinson, Returning Officer.

• 2.05pm - Briefing by West Mercia Police warning of election offences.

• 2.20pm - Briefing by District Council nominees on the mechanics of standing for election.

• 3.15pm - Briefing by County Council officers on the Council itself, introduced by Chief Executive Clare Marchant and including information on: Children's services, finances, partnerships, Highways and roads, Adult Social Care and an overview of Worcestershire's demographics and challenges going forward.

Simon Mallinson, Returning Officer for Worcestershire County Council, said: "Candidates' Day is a great first step for those interested in standing for election to the County Council."

"This can sometimes appear a little daunting and Candidates' Day can help prospective candidates fully understand the process, as well as the legal foundations of standing for election, and the roles and responsibilities of a Councillor."

The Notice of Election will be published on Monday 20 March and prospective candidates will then have up until 4pm on Tuesday 4 April to get their nomination papers submitted.
