THE TASTE of blackberries, coffee, lemon and lemongrass are some of the unusual flavours beer drinkers can enjoy during a bi-annual festival being held at Wetherspoon pubs across the country.

The beers, which will be available at The Postal Order in Foregate Street, and the Crown in Broad Street, Worcester; The Old Swanne Inne in Evesham; and The Foley Arms Hotel in Malvern come from 30 award-winning breweries in the Uk and abroad.

The festival runs until Sunday April 2 and includes Salopian Lemon Dream (4.5 per cent ABV). Lemon Dream was named the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA’s) 2012 National Champion Speciality Beer. Brewed by Shropshire-based Salopian Brewery, this shimmering golden ale is made using Amarillo, Brewer’s Gold and Challenger hops, as well as organic lemons – adding beautiful, subtle, zesty aromas and a citrus-filled fruity finish.

Another of the distinctive beers is Mauldons Blackberry Porter (winner of SIBA East's Champion Speciality Beer in 2016). This is described as a full-bodied black porter with a balanced hop aroma and rich blend of chocolate and roast flavours.

A third unusual flavour can be found in a beer called Cappuccino (4.5 per cent ABV) by Titanic Brewery from Staffordshire. This is a black beer combining the dry character of this brewery’s award-winning stout with the warm, enveloping flavour of cappuccino.

The initial nutty coffee aroma leads to a smooth coffee, chocolate and roasted malt flavour. With Goldings, Northdown and Willamette hops, this brew has achieved several awards, including SIBA Midlands Champion Speciality Beer in 2012.

The overseas beers are Back Garden (Bagby Brewing, USA); Mild the Gap (Birrificio MC-77, Italy); Flink (Brouwerij 'T IJ, Holland); Burton Pale Ale (Bodebrown Brewery, Brazil) and Continental IPA (St Louis Brewery, USA). Each of the overseas brewers has won awards for its beer in its respective country.

All beers are priced at £2.25 a pint and customers will be able to sample a trio of real ales in special third-of-a-pint glasses for the same price of a pint.

The Postal Order manager Robert Deeming said: "We are promising our customers a superb range of award-winning ales, including some great beers from overseas and many others from brewers across the UK.

"The festival will be the perfect way for real ale enthusiasts to enjoy a range of excellent beers over 12 days."

Tasting notes on all of the beers will be available in each of the pubs. For more information about the festival and to download the tasting notes visit https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/real-ale-festival
