A COW had to rescued by firefighters after falling into a canal in Alvechurch.

The rescue took place at 11am on Monday, July 24, at the Worcester-Birmingham canal.

Fire crews from Redditch and Droitwich used an inflatable boat and a general purpose line, while a canal narrowboat and Alvechurch Marina staff were also involved in the rescue.

A spokesman from the Worcester-Birmingham and Droitwich Canals Society said: “We are pleased to say no cattle or people were hurt in the operation.”

Fire services have been called to 15,293 animal rescues across the country in the last three years, according to figures released this week.

Those rescues have cost at least £6 million with an average cost of £400 per rescue, leading the Taxpayers' Alliance to question whether it was an efficient use of public money.
