The Friends of St Swithun’s presented a cheque for £5,000 to The Churches Conservation Trust for the urgent appeal to save St Swithun’s Church.

With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, ambitious plans have been unveiled by the heritage charity to undertake urgent roof repairs and to regenerate the church as a city centre arts venue but they need to raise £90,000 over the next two months to ensure the project can go ahead.

The Friends of Swithun's celebrated St Swithun's Day on Saturday, July 15 with their annual festival of music and Evensong.

The service and celebrations were attended by the Mayor of Worcester, Cllr Steve Mackay, who cut the traditional celebration cake.

This year’s cake, made by Jayne Taylor, shows William Shakespeare outside the city centre church.

The annual cake celebrates the Worcester sugar baker, William Swift, who, in the 18th century, left the money to St Swithun’s church to provide the distinctive William and Robert Gray organ that is still in use now.
