A DEDICATED team of volunteers cook breakfast all year round for people who find themselves living on the streets in Hereford.

Hereford Open Door is an independent charity which runs from St Peter's Church House every Monday and Thursday.

There is a group of volunteers who take it in turns to run the breakfast mornings from 8am to 9.30am and provide sausage, egg, bacon and beans with unlimited drinks and toast.

The charity aims to help those who find themselves homeless, living in temporary or sub-standard accommodation, or on their own - but no questions are asked and there is no test to pass.

The number of people attending varies but it fluctuates between 30 and 40.

One of the volunteers, Caroline Bennett, said: "It is usually the same people every time. When I first started three years ago people had to pay 50 pence. We stopped that ages ago. Now anyone can come. It is an open door."

Donations keep the mornings running. During Christmas they run it for six days with cereal and toast for breakfast and then a two course lunch.

If people would like to donate Christmas presents then please call the charity to find out what is suitable. They cannot give out presents which are already wrapped as they need to open them to check what is inside.

Ms Bennett said: "Please ring us and get in touch with us to find out what we need. There are lots of things we actually need - things like socks and boxer shorts."

People who go along for the breakfast can also have a shower.

To find out more about how you can help or what to donate call Ian and Mary on 01432 278328 or chairman Mike Wilkinson on 01432 264482.

There is a separate night shelter at St Peter's House called St Peter’s Winter Shelter which runs from November until March 11. The shelter is able to accommodate a maximum of 16 men and three women each night.
