LOCAL artists from musicians to potters and Christmas card makers were celebrated at a Worcester Christmas market.

Wayland’s Yard in Foregate Street held a festival over the weekend, with two rooms and the outside area full of local products for people to buy, with a number of Christmas themed items to buy.

Owner Sam Smith, who opened the business in October 2016, said: “Everything we do here is about supporting the local area. We stock local products and use local suppliers.

“Hopefully this will mean we can hold similar events at Easter and Christmas, as this is the first time we have done a market.

“We have held summer parties but never anything like this and we are very pleased by the response by local artists.”

Amongst the items on offer for people to buy were personalised necklaces, dog products, soaps, wooden animals, jewellery, Christmas baubles, glass products and pictures by local photographers.

Over the weekend local musical talents Ben Hughes, Deborah Rose, Georgia Szygowka, Stream of Sound and Boneyard Productions also performed.

Two charities supporting children in Uganda and Guatemala were also selling handmade items.

Chris Greening, a potter from Claines said: “I go to a few of these kind of events but it is nice to have one in the city, I usually go to Hereford or Malvern.

“I think it is a really impressive display and the staff here have done very well to put it together.”

Claire Hilton, from St John’s selling handmade Christmas decorations said: “I absolutely think that there should be more of these events.

“I think people are getting fed up with the big businesses and corporations taking over Christmas and it is good to celebrate local, independent businesses.”

In total, 22 stalls filled with more than 30 young artists were there.

Wayland’s Yard, which is donating 20p of every takeaway sale to Maggs Day Centre, held the festival and market on Saturday December 16 and Sunday December 17.
