POLICE descended on a city street after a man was spotted wielding a small pocketknife.

The male was spotted near the Postal Order pub, in Foregate Street, Worcester, at shortly before 5.30pm yesterday.

The pub's manager said his staff reported that a security guard chased a shoplifter through the building at around 6pm last night.

The manager was not aware of anyone being armed and said he was happy that no one was injured.

It is not yet clear if the two incidents are related.

An eyewitness said he saw three armed officers outside the pub at around 5.45pm, however the police deny that armed officers were sent to the scene.

Police officers carried out a thorough search of the surrounding streets, however they were not able to find the armed man.
