LITTLE blue tokens have led to youngsters at Bromesberrow Primary having an expanded outdoors area, where lessons in road safety can be taught.

Shoppers at Tesco in Ledbury are able to vote for various community projects, with the blue tokens, and the funding for projects comes from re-useable shopping bag sales.

Head teacher Sue Thornley said: "If you have ever wondered if it is worth putting those little blue tokens in boxes at the supermarket, for the Tesco Bags for Help Programme, well let me reassure you that it most certainly is.

"Here at Bromesberrow St Mary’s C of E Primary School we were very lucky to come second, in the choices made by the public, and were granted £10,000 by Tesco to build an extension to our outdoor area for our Early Years and Bromesberrow Tots children."

She added: "We would like to say an enormous thank you to Tesco but also to all of the people of Ledbury who so generously chose to support us.

"What we have managed to build is a completely fenced off and secured tarmacked area with road markings on the ground, road signs and even a working set of traffic lights. In addition we have also managed to build a climbing mountain which is proving very popular."

The new area will help the children to learn about road safety, improve their fitness levels, their balancing and their climbing skills.

Miss Thornley said: "Our PTA contributed to the project enabling us to buy more trikes for the children to ride, and our landscaping was then completed when older children in the school joined with Ledbury Rotary to Plant purple crocuses for Polio thereby making it truly a community project.

"We would not have been able to build this area without the grant from Tesco and the local community."

Bromesberrow Tots meet every Wednesday (term time) 10am to11.30am in the school hall.
