A BROMSGROVE school has been handed a huge £310,000 cash boost to carry out emergency asbestos removal and essential roof repairs.

St John’s Church of England Middle School, on Watt Close, has been handed the sum through the Government’s Condition Improvement Fund (CIF).

Money will help improve the school safety for children and staff by fixing two on-going problems with the school building.

Headteacher Geraint Roberts said: “We are delighted with the news.

“We have a policy of trying to bring funding into the school so put in two bids all together.

“In the boiler room there was minor asbestos found at our recent inspection so part of this will pay for the removal of that.

“The other will be used for roof repairs in the entrance.

“The roof has been in steady decline. Every time it rains heavily we needed to get buckets to collect the water as it was a leaking roof, so this will really help.”

The Government announced the successful applicants for CIF cash earlier this month.

A total of 1,556 projects at 1,299 academies and sixth-form colleges across the country received money, totalling £514 million.

St John's CoE Middle School was the only one in Bromsgrove to receive cash in the latest round of funding for 2018 to 2019.

Staff have already held a meeting on their plans for the money, and aim to carry out the essential works during the summer holidays to minimise disruption.
