Gas works in Old Hill

A £200,000 scheme to improve the gas network in Old Hill is due to begin this month. Work will begin on September 22 to replace the old metal medium pressure main running along Halesowen Road, Barrs Road and Beauty Bank with a new hard-wearing plastic pipe. The project, which is expected to be completed within six weeks, has been planned in cooperation with Railtrack to take advantage of the closure of Beauty Bank to allow for repairs to the rail bridge.

In response to Mrs T Andrews of Romsley. Yes all have the right to enjoy our village, even the children! I assume you are one of those people who believe children should be seen and not heard. If you could be bothered to actually talk to some of these kids, instead of moaning about them, you will find they are not louts hanging about, causing trouble. They are academically gifted, sportsmen, musicians, involved with scouting and fundraising. We regularly have up to half a dozen of them playing in our house and small garden. Yes they make noise but children are supposed to make noise. As for ‘No Ball Games’ signs, I think a sign saying ‘No Moaning’ would be better.  − Eddie Humphrys, Proud Father, Romsley Village

Having just read your article about the Children's Home in Corngreaves Road Cradley Heath I feel I need to make contact. I am the MD of Voices In Harmony choir, and until a month ago the choir was based at Four Ways Baptist Church right next door to the home. When the home was opened choir members were warned we may expect some disturbance to our weekly rehearsals and even damage to our cars parked on the adjoining road and car park. However we decided from day one to introduce ourselves to the young folk at the home, to tell them who we were and even invite them into our rehearsals. Since the opening of the home choir members have not had a single complaint against the home or, more to the point, the children who have been residents. feel that far too often far too many people pre judge situations and in particular are far too committed in “trashing” reputations of young people.  − Stephen J.D.
