AN archaeological dig has started in Herefordshire on an historical house.

As part of the refurbishment and works to create a new building for Ledbury’s library and Info centre, an archaeological dig has started at the Master’s House, which is one of the oldest buildings in the town.

An appeal for volunteers to help with the dig received an excellent response with 18 people standing by to join the dig which started on Monday.

To allow the dig to take place, 37 car parking spaces will be affected in St Katherine’s car park but this will be reduced to 34. Alternative parking has also been arranged at Pugh’s Estate Agents office off Market Square which will offer 35 spaces, Monday to Friday, from 8.30am until 5.30pm.

Priority at Pugh’s Estate Agents will be given to the present 35 permit holders who will be notified by letter and the alternative parking, which will be signed at the entrance, is available until Friday, February 20.

Throughout the dig, staff and office facilities will be provided in the Master’s House, thereby reducing the footprint of the dig.

Kate Murray, Herefordshire Council’s assistant cultural services manager, said: “We want the people of Ledbury to feel involved in this project and there will be an opportunity for them to see the dig taking place with a viewing platform on site and some open days.

“Before major work starts on the new building, Herefordshire Council wants to start repair and restoration work in the panelled room of the Master’s House and is seeking consent from English Heritage to remove the old doctor’s partition wall, restore the sash windows and fireplace and to repair the floor,” she added.
