Family of six stuck in cramped home

A FAMILY of six is living in a cramped two-bedroom second floor house because the bidding system was not explained properly to them, they say.

Lisa Buzza has been waiting for years to move out of the Cranham Drive flat, in Warndon, but was told she could not leave until the £2,000 rent arrears she accumulated had been cleared.

But it seems this is not the case and Miss Buzza, aged 24, needs to bid for a new house before being considered. She has not done this because she claims no one told her.

She said: “I told them my situation and he said we cannot move until we have paid the arrears. I did not know anything about the bidding system.”

Miss Buzza lives in the flat with her partner Phil Barrow, 23, and four children Jamie-Leigh, six, Ethan, five, Paige, two, and Skye, nine months.

The oldest three children sleep in one bedroom and Skye sleeps with her parents in the second room.

Unemployed Miss Buzza, who has a heart complaint and health problems following a bout of childhood rheumatic fever, struggles to get her two youngest children safely down the stairs.

Her partner does not feel he can leave her at home alone, and has postponed looking for a job until the family is moved to suitable accommodation. Mr Barrow said: “I am well bored being in the flat all the time. If I got a job she would not be able to get out of the flat. We need more room, we are outgrowing this place, they cannot keep us here much longer.”

Miss Buzza said: “Yes, I have had the kids but I do not want them suffering for what I have done.”

A spokesman for Worcester Community Housing (WCH), which owns the flat, said all properties are allocated through the HomeChoice Plus Scheme. Once registered, tenants need to bid for the homes they want. Miss Buzza is registered on the scheme but has not bid for a single property. She is also paying off her housing debts.

Iain Harkess, head of operations at WCH, said: “Every bid made to move to another WCH home is considered individually.

“Until a bid is made no decisions are made on whether or not a transfer can take place. Once a bid is make we would examine a tenant’s payment record and level of outstanding debts at that time.

“I would encourage the tenant in question to have a look at the properties advertised on HomeChoice Plus and if she feels there is something suitable to made a bid. We can then look at her situation in more detail.”

My blood pressure just went off the scale!
Does she really think she's going to get any sympathy from anyone? She says no-one told her what to do. Obviously no-one told her that if you have health problems it's not a good idea to have 4 children in 6 years either! Especially if you've been waiting to move 'for years' because you didn't have enough space to start with. And her partner seems to think that the more children they have the better chance, they have of being moved. Shot himself in the foot with that statement didn't he?

Absolute disgrace.
Take the children into care, then evict the parents for rent arrears, and have nothing to do with them until they take responsibility for their own lives and do not see sponging off society as a right.

Oh how I agree with the above comments, if one has a heart condition she should have been sensible and not have had more children I am sure her obstetrician would have recommended not to have more children if it was a real concern.
There must be more deserving families than these although I am sorry for the children, perhaps their families could help to pay off the debts and be there for her whilst her partner finds work !!
Perhaps some literacy classes would have helped her to read the information regarding the bidding for another home.

Please give some credit - the father of the children has only 'postponed' looking for a job. This is very thoughtful of him as he is 'well bored'. Alas it is all in the name of being able to help her out of the flat.

I presume that him being "well bored" means more children will be on the way.

. . . . . Another case of 'the state should take full responsibility for my life, home, children, income, housing and social problems'. Sadly not isolated, and defiinately on the increase.

Another week, another sob-story from the WN.

I don't know how it has come to this where people of working age seem to expect handouts based on the fact that they have more and more children. More children = bigger house.

So nobody told her? How about finding out for yourself, instead of expecting everything done for you?

Also, you've had 4 kids, so your heart complication can't be that serious, can it? There are plenty of jobs out there, that aren't altogether that hard to do. e.g. office admin etc?

As for the partner - how very considerate of him to "postpone" looking for a job. how about we just "postpone" their benefits until he gets a job - sounds fair I think?

I'm "well-bored" of hearing about sob stories like this, where the problems are entirely of their own making. Contraception is free.

I'm also "well-bored" of paying taxes to fund the lifestyles of these workshy baby farmers and think it is a disgrace that people like them continually blame WCH or "the council" for not giving them a bigger house.

If you want the house of your dreams, get out there and work for it like the rest of us. What happened to the get educated, save to buy/rent your own place and then have kids when you're financially secure?

Why have kids so young? I just don't get it!!!

isn’t there some wonderful phrases in this piece "Unemployed Miss Buzza" "postponed looking for a job" i wonder if he ever started, just some simple advice don’t postpone looking for a job start looking for one, stop trying to get everything for nothing, stop having children if you cant afford them. It’s all simple stuff really work for something hard enough and you will get there eventually. I think the point is proven by this article and several others that the working population has run out of patience with all the hangers on and enough is enough!

If these two don't get off their lazy backsides they are destined for a really rubbish life. No good holidays, rubbish food, etc. They may think they are getting things for free but the truth is that they are missing out on so many great things in life. I wouldn't swap a life of fags, tea and daytime TV for my life of gourmet food and international travel. Still, horses for courses I suppose.

I also agree with Maggie that it was a clever piece of journalism - played it with a nice straight bat there Lucy and let them hang themselves with their own bit of rope!
The WN knows exactly what sort of story makes us blow a fuse - but at least this wasn't written in the usual sugary saccherine 'please feel sorry for me' way that annoys us even more.

The mind boggles - Another fine use of my taxes.

The only person that can help you is yourself.

You are responsible for yourself and now unfortunately children too. Expecting the council to sort her life out is not the actions of a responsible adult. The life handed on a plate i.e. benefits rather than work brigade swells larger whilst those of us that are responsible put off having our own children.....

Sickening.

Full marks to Lucy Tatchell for this very subtle unsympathetic article. If this couple were expecting that going to the WN would win them a landslide of support and a rapid move to a large house (together with a sackload more benefit cash presumably) they are sadly mistaken.
Like clerken, I`m mystified how they got into rent arrears when it`s paid by the DHSS - that`s financial mismanagement only Gordon Brown can match!!!!

I too had rheumatic fever as a child, i'm sorry but this is a load of twaddle, if she has a heart condition likes she says she would not have that many children, her ob/gyne, would have advised her not to have more than 2 children because it would be to much of a strain on her heart and lungs, also it never stopped me working nor my husband, who happened to be in the armed forces, many a time i was alone and far from family, stop whingin and get off your backside and do something usefull and stop relying on others to bail you out.

CJH, Worcester says...
5:11pm Fri 10 Jul 09

Miss Buzza seems to have a bit of a history of 'nobody told me' and 'I don't know what to do' and 'please feel sorry for me'. I thought her name rang a bell (pun absolutely intended!)If you do a search for Lisa Buzza on this website you'll find it's not the first time she's gone looking for sympathy...

I would suggest that Miss Buzza & her "well bored" partner take some responsibility for not paying the rent for what must have been the best part of 12 months! yeah of course WCH should re-house you!!!! get real. Another idea is contraception. Thesde two make me sick and seem to be the norm at the moment. And no one told them about the bidding system? dear me, someone elses fault again. I suggest you both join the rest of us struggling every day to make a living rather than "postpone" the job hunting.

6:29pm Fri 10 Jul 09

I take it this is the same Lisa Buzza who was fined for dumping rubbish near her flats some time ago? Some people should wake up and realise that the world doesn't owe them anything and it's time to take responsibility for yourself. It doesn't mention in the article if Mr Barrow is the father of any of the children, if he is then surely he must get of his backside instead of being 'well bored' and get a job! Start contributing towards the family and be a man for goodness sake. As for Miss Buzza using her health as an excuse that's really not relevant is it? I suppose she expects to get a large house with the rent paid etc - dream on young lady!

At the risk of being politically incorrect (which bothers me not at all), like most of the people posting here, I think this situation is a good representation of the state this country is in these days.

6 kids, no job, unmarried, on the dole (presumably) and with a partner who doesn't work either? Obviously I sympathise with the lady for her health issues, but having so many kids in her situation just reeks of a lack of common sense. The knowledge that the taspayer will pay her way must be quite reassuring!

I wonder if (and call me cynical here) any of those kids were planned purely for the purpose of 'free' housing, or were they down to simple stupidity?

There's only one thing I can add to the brilliant comments above (that couldn't be more true. On inspection of Mr Barrow's Facebook (available for anyone to view), he says: "Phil Barrow has had a good days fishing with the boys." - So much for having to stay at home and look after the 'missus' and 'babbers' then. I wish there was a choice of what your taxes went towards, because I wouldn't give a penny towards people like that.

I have to say...considering they are meant to be struggling to pay for their rent, the massive flatscreen telly and racks of DVDs in Phil's photos on his Facebook profile tell another story...as do his statuses about going fishing and getting wrecked on stella!!! Why the hell are the government paying out for kids to have kids and get p***ed when people like me are studying AND working hard to pay our own rent and make a better future so we can have children at the right time and pay for them ourselves!? It really is so frustrating to be working so hard and remaining so poor, when people are sitting on their a***s and spending my tax contributions on flatscreen tellys and beer!!!! Really makes my blood boil. Ever heard of CONTRACEPTION???!!! Maybe I should jack in my Uni course and job and have a few kids, I'd be better off apparently!!
