Island is a massive improvement

I would just like to say that, for me, Grange Island has improved drastically. I work at Bartley Green so using the Grange Island from Halesowen is the quickest way for me to get there. However, A LONG TIME before the alterations were carried out, I gave up going in that direction because of the way traffic used to clog up my exit lane from the island over to Grange Hill Road and also because of the impatient drivers who used to use the wrong lane (the 'straight over' lane) to nip across the people waiting to turn left onto Manor Way. So, I started using Mucklow Hill and going the long way round to work.

Upon its completion, I decided to try Grange Island out again and found it a dream. I find visibility is very good, the traffic does not seem to be on top of you like it used to. Coming home is the same. Not a problem crossing it at all. The give way lines keep the waiting traffic further back from the lane you are using so that the people creeping over it do not obstruct you like they used to.

I too was very sceptical about the alterations, I did not think they would improve the island for the better but I am happy to admit that I was wrong.

One thing though, I don't think that the sculpture would be a very good idea. Wouldn't it obscure that newly found visibility?

Well said, Sue. You probably speak for the great 'silent majority' of Halesonians who are pleased with the new island.

Whilst I accept that we have an unusual road system in part where 2 lanes merge into 1 or 3 into 2 creating ridiculous bottle necks, I have to say that for the most part basic lane discipline and roadcraft is the biggest problem. It's the drivers that make roundabouts dangerous! As a professional motorcycle instructor the amount of poor and frankley dangerous driving on the approach to and leaving roundabouts is always staggering. Basic rule; if your exit is anywhere between the 6 and 12 o'clock position you stay in the left lane and indicate at the appropriate time. If your exit is anywhere past the 12 o'clock position you use the righthand lane. The variation to this is if lanes are marked directionally. Drivers have to stop using the middle lane to turn left or the left lane to turn right! If it exists the middle lane is used to go straight ahead unless otherwise marked. If you miss your exit don't force your way across, go around again or take the exit appropriate you your lane and stop being needlessly dangerous.
