Tweaks won’t fix it!

In the Halesowen News on January 14 Jeff Hill says a few tweaks to the lane markings at the Grange island are being looked at.

When will these planners accept that they have made a complete mess of the island and a few tweaks to road markings will do nothing?

The island is now more dangerous, it has slowed traffic flow and they have created two lanes that no traffic uses.

During the recentbad weather, these two lanes were covered in snow with no tyre tracks for a week.

The island is too big in diametre by at least 10 metres and the new footpaths on both sides of Manor Way prevent traffic from filtering left.

Why don’t those planners call a public meeting to discuss the island with the people who use it?

They say the island is to have a visual landmark erected. May I suggest that a folly would be more appropriate.

It would have been far better to leave the island alone and put the £1.2 million toward a smaller council tax increase.

Whilst I accept that we have an unusual road system in part where 2 lanes merge into 1 or 3 into 2 creating ridiculous bottle necks, I have to say that for the most part basic lane discipline and roadcraft is the biggest problem. It's the drivers that make roundabouts dangerous! As a professional motorcycle instructor the amount of poor and frankley dangerous driving on the approach to and leaving roundabouts is always staggering. Basic rule; if your exit is anywhere between the 6 and 12 o'clock position you stay in the left lane and indicate at the appropriate time. If your exit is anywhere past the 12 o'clock position you use the righthand lane. The variation to this is if lanes are marked directionally. Drivers have to stop using the middle lane to turn left or the left lane to turn right! If it exists the middle lane is used to go straight ahead unless otherwise marked. If you miss your exit don't force your way across, go around again or take the exit appropriate you your lane and stop being needlessly dangerous.
