This year is the bicentennial anniversary of the birth of the first white man to set eyes on The Smoke That Thunders in Africa - Dr Livingston.

In true Victorian style he presumed he could name the breathtaking African waterfall after a woman thousands of miles away, and the name Victoria Falls has remained the name for one of the world’s greatest natural wonders.

The Scotsman had an eye for the dramatic when he uttered the immortal description of the mighty Zambezi’s majestic waterfall.

He said: “So lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.”

This year Zambia, which still has a charming town named after Livingstone, is hailing the great man with a series of festivities kicking off in March and running until the end of November.

Tourists can make the most of this historic year with Sun International (www.suninternational.com) and stay at the stunning Royal Livingstone, which rests within sight of the falls, for three nights and receive a fourth night for free with Kuoni. Rooms start from £211 per night on a bed and breakfast basis and the offer is available until 30 November 2013.

The hotel is the perfect place to enjoy Africa with great food and a laid back grandeur that fits in perfectly with the habitat and amazing wildlife.

And of course if you want to microlight or fly over the waterfalls in a helicopter the hotel is the perfect place for a nip of whisky for Dutch courage.

Now is the time to visit this amazing place and March is also the best time of year to see Victoria Falls as the Zambezi’s water level is at its highest.

The town of Livingstone is celebrating Dr. Livingstone’s legacy and his commitment to exploration, medicine, education and the eradication of slavery with a series of cultural events and festivities from March to November 2013.

Visitors can make the most of the festivities with live performances taking place on the banks of the Zambezi, regattas on the river, golf and fishing competitions, cultural talks and even motor cross events and rallies.
