THE master of melancholy Leonard Cohen has announced he is returning to Birmingham in September.

The Canadian singer-songwriter will be bringing his very own brand of poetic beauty set to music to the LG Arena on September 8.

Known for both beautiful and cutting lyrics and brilliant live performances Cohen’s fans will be delighted is returning to the Midlands after five years.

In the ensuing time he has toured the world over and even managed to fit in a show stopping performance at Glastonbury.

With a career spanning six decades the 79-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down and has been in constant demand since his comeback in 2008.

The reclusive songster had ridden into the sunset years before but was forced to return due being swindled by his former manager as he lived in a monk’s retreat. However, that cruel twist of fate has given a new generation of devotees to see the great man live.

His body of work dates back to the early 1960s and albums like Songs Of Leonard Cohen (1967), Songs Of Love And Hate (1970) and I'm Your Man (1990), right up to 1992's The Future, 2001's Ten New Songs and 2004's Dear Heather are all considered classics.

Songs like Suzanne, Everybody Knows, The Gypsy Wife, So Long, Marianne, Bird on a Wire and Hallelujah all demonstrate his ability to capture the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Whether it be a broken heart or jealous rage Cohen has always seemed to have a lyric that fits the situation.

Musicians across the world revere him and songs have been covered by other artists an incredible 1,330 times and famous fans include U2, REM, Sting, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright and the late Johnny Cash.

His songs have also been used in over 50 films including Oliver Stone’s violent epic Natural Born Killers, McCabe and Mrs Miller and Kiss the Sky.
