BIG is always not beautiful but often small is perfectly formed, writes Steve Zacharanda.

This is becoming the case with cinemas with the popularity of smaller cinemas and pop-up picture houses going through the roof.

Film-lovers in the Midlands will be licking their popcorn devouring lips at the news The Mailbox in Birmingham has a new boutique cinema.

Opening on Friday, Everyman Mailbox is set to become Birmingham’s most sought after cinema, offering a luxurious made-to-measure environment, delicious food and drink menu and a state-of-the-art sound and vision experience.

Situated in the canal side area of the Mailbox, the 12,350 sq ft venue boasts three screens, showing both national releases and a regularly updated and curated themed film programme.

Everyman’s trademark sofa seating can be found in each of the three screens, creating a superior level of comfort, with a private bar to service its largest screen.

Everyman’s signature cinema style also includes a handpicked snack selection as well as its unique gourmet ‘Spielburger’ offering which includes its signature hamburger, a pure-bred Aberdeen Angus beef pattie, covered in a cheese of your choice, dressed with house sauce and wrapped in a glazed brioche bun, available in the foyer or directly served to your cinema seat.

The film programme boasts carefully chosen new releases alongside a curated film schedule and an array of exclusive live events, complementing other creative activity within the Mailbox calendar. The experience will be heightened by the quality of the projection powered by Sony 4K digital technology and Dolby integrated sound.

Crispin Lilly, CEO at Everyman Cinema, which also has venues in Leeds and across London, said: “We're delighted to be able to bring the Everyman experience to Birmingham. The city has such a strong tradition in cinema yet we truly believe we offer a fabulous, new and unique way to see a film. We look forward to exceeding the expectations of our new customers here at the Mailbox.”

David Pardoe, retail manager at the Mailbox, added: “We’re delighted to welcome Everyman Cinemas to both the Mailbox and the Midlands, with the unique venue strengthening our status as Birmingham’s premier leisure and retail destination. We’re getting ready for an exciting few months as our redevelopment nears completion, and what better way to begin than with the opening of Everyman Cinemas.”

As the Mailbox gears up for its exciting re-launch this Spring, Harvey Nichols, Emporio Armani, Nicky Clarke, Toni & Guy and BBC Birmingham remain open, along with the bars, restaurants, hotels, commercial offices and car park. The Mailbox will also welcome new bar and restaurant, Gas Street Social, which is due to open in March.
