Six of the best gadgets and gizmos on a theme. This week: Six of the best picnic By Peter Jenkinson.
Britons seem to revel in the novelty of eating outdoors, even if it's just grabbing a sandwich and sitting in the park at lunchtime.
But a get-together with family and friends can make dining alfresco an even more enjoyable affair.
We've scoured around for gadgets to enhance your outdoor eating experience, here's our favourite six.
Sitting Pretty - Y.Ply Outdoor Seat - £24.99 from www.iwoot.com We're not averse to the traditional blanket but this prop should be treated as an essential item for any outdoor trip. This lightweight contraption unfolds in moments to give you a comfortable seating position and it is ideal for supporting the neck and head while having a post-picnic lie-down.
No Yolk - Egg-Q-Ber - £4.99 from www.firebox.com This is likely to be one of the daftest things you've seen, but it really does serve a purpose. As most will know, hard-boiled eggs just do not behave. But pop your peeled egg into this smart gadget and it'll be transformed into a cube shape. This not only stops it from rolling off your picnic plate but, when sliced, it's ideal for getting your filling right to the edges of your sarnies.
Wine Cooler - Corkcicle - £19.99 from www.firebox.com Up there with soggy crisps and limp lettuce is warm white wine. This icicle-like device goes into your freezer overnight, the gel inside maintaining its temperature for far longer than ice-cubes, then pop it into your bottle of pinot and it'll begin to chill your favourite tipple. It keeps the top sealed too.
Table Top - Picnic Rug Long Grass - £30 from www.thecamouflagecompany.com You'll most certainly need a picnic rug as the centrepiece for your gathering, but most of them aren't as eye-grabbing as this one. With a damp-resistant underside and a top side that blends seamlessly into the surroundings, well, unless you're on a beach that is, this rug, quite ironically, stands out from the picnic crowd.
Finger Food - Baladeo Pocket Cutlery Set - £19.99 at www.firebox.com Stuck in the outdoors with bottles of vino chilled and ready to quaff, you'll not be forgiven for forgetting the all-essential corkscrew or bottle opener. This device has both of those on board, yet also shoehorns in a fork, spoon and knife. And you might well be called upon to save the day with the combined flathead screwdriver - well, you really never know.
Ready Meal - Aladdin Bento Boxes - £16 each at www.amazon.co.uk This is quite simply a stunning way to pack up your food before you embark on your outdoor adventure, and best of all, it can keep the contents hot or cold for up to five hours. Plus, when it isn't picnicking, it's ideal for the family's packed lunches.
App of the week- Picnic Wars - 69p from iTunes Play your role on either side of the edible army in this ever-enduring battle of fruit versus vegetable. The aim of the game is to catapult your projectiles into enemy lines and beat them to a pulp. With 64 colourful levels, this highly rated game will keep you amused for a while.
