Shock new figures on D deficiency

Nine out of ten people could be vitamin D deficient, with nearly two thirds severely lacking, according to new figures.

The extraordinary findings, announced ahead of a major national awareness campaign, suggest a massive proportion of the UK population are at risk of a range of debilitating symptoms brought on by deficiency.

Of those diagnosed as being severely deficient, most (71 per cent) do not take any form of supplement- highlighting a clear link between deficiency and supplementation.

The findings come from a survey by health pioneers BetterYou, who are supporting National Vitamin D Awareness Week, which aims to raise public understanding of the dangers of deficiency.

Andrew Thomas, founder and managing director at BetterYou, said: “Our findings further confirm what we have long suspected, that our nation is far more deficient in vitamin D than we would care to admit.

“Almost ninety per cent of 168 people interviewed provided either classic symptoms of advanced vitamin D deficiency or listed multiple lifestyle conditions which would predispose them to be deficient. These include a combination of having darker skin pigmentation, spending daylight hours indoors and excessive use of UV sun cream.

“These findings simply reinforce our support of the UK’s first National Vitamin D Awareness Week. The subject has been discussed in the House of Commons, leading to “at risk” groups being identified and supplementation recommendations made by our Department of Health. The awareness week is the natural next step to raise understanding with the general public.”

Other findings from the survey of 168 UK adults show most (77 per cent) spend much of their day indoors. This puts people at risk of deficiency because 90 per cent of the body’s vitamin D must come from sun exposure, with the other 10 per cent from our diet.

Almost half of those surveyed also said they regularly suffer with low energy levels (47 per cent) and 40 per cent experienced regular aches and pains in their bones and joints. Both are key symptoms of deficiency.

BetterYou, a pioneer of the sub-lingual delivery of vitamin D, has previously serum tested over 250 members of the UK general public and not found one to be displaying a healthy and sustainable level of vitamin D.

Earlier this year the Chief Medical Officer for England, Dame Sally Davies announced her concerns to health professionals regarding a rise in vitamin D related conditions, asking them to consider vitamin D supplementation for at risk groups, including pregnant mothers.

Following this, it was announced by Labour MP Kate Green in September, that cases of rickets have increased more than 400 per cent since 1996.

National Vitamin D Awareness Week runs from Monday, October 29 to Sunday, November 4. To support the week, BetterYou is offering everyone the chance to boost their vitamin D levels, with 20 per cent discount off its DLux range of daily vitamin D sprays. Thanks for an interesting article!

You do not mention anything about the reason for the widespread vitamin D deficiency.

I suppose the most obvious reason is an overzealous sun avoidance due to all the warning messages from dermatologists and cancer societies during the last 30 years?

Nature has made us to MAKE vitamin D, not to TAKE it.

20 minutes full body exposure in mid-summer sunshine (in the middle of the day) will give you 10,000 to 20,000 IU vitamin D. 10 minutes in a tanning bed with low-pressure lamps emitting 2-2.6% UVB (in relation to UVA) will give 8,000 - 10,000 IU.

New research is showing that vitamin D is probably not the only benefit of UV-exposure.

If you "tan" for vitamin D (and not for getting as dark as possible) you will stay far from the time needed for sunburn. This will reduce any risks to below zero and it will not cause any photoaging.

I have proved it on myself and you can read about my experience here:

CityAssays (Birmingham NHS pathlab) offer postal 25(OH)D tests by post for £25 or less if you bulk buy.
While it is possible to buy UVB emitting tanning tubes most tubes are mainly UVA and so have a very poor ability to improve vitamin d status. Vitamin D production from sunlight is not possible in the UK from Oct through to the end of Feb and even then most people will find it difficult to expose all the skin surface for sufficient time.
Urban pollution prevents UVB reaching ground level. UVB converts 7 dehydroCHOLESTEROL to form CHOLEcalciferol. These are CHOLESTEROL based molecules, many people are on cholesterol lowering meds or diets hence lowering ability to make Vit d.
Healthy Origins Vitamin D 5000iu drops £4.50 for years supply from IHERB USA. or £13 Amazon BigVits UK. Code wab666 save $5 initially at Iherb.
1000iu daily for each 25lbs you weigh should be sufficient but give it 3~6 months before testing and raising the dose by 1000iu for each 25nmol/l below target and reducing by same amount if over 125nmol/l.
125nmol/l (50ng/ml) is the level human DNA naturally achieves equilibrium if we lived naked outdoor lives as we evolved. At that level breast milk is vit d replete and Vit d is best able to regulate inflammation.

@ CharlieTanner
"the reason for the widespread vitamin D deficiency."
Atmospheric pollution blocks UVB penetration to ground level. Less UVB less Vit D.
Modern medications deplete vitamin D reserves. Corticosteroids are one example but there are others. Stress causes Cortisol levels to rise, Cortisol is a corticosteroid and so depletes vit D.
High Fructose Corn Syrup (and it's derivatives) can also lower vit d.

"20 minutes full body exposure in mid-summer sunshine (in the middle of the day) will give you 10,000 to 20,000 IU vitamin D." But only if you LAY stark Naked.
Wearing clothes or sunscreen lowers production. Living in a town increases pollution, blocks UVB and lowers production. Diet (fructose) depletes vit d, Stress depletes D3, Statins lower 7 dehydrocholesterol so lower vit d potential as do sterols or any other cholesterol lowering diet. Because we cannot rely on UVB in winter and even in summer it's often too cold/windy/cloudy to use sunlight supplements are a safer idea providing to take sufficient to equate to the amounts you should have been making from FULL BODY midday nonburning sunexposure.
