SORRY Stourbridge crashed out of the FA Cup to County Durham side Shildon, writes Nick Pullen.

They fell behind to an unfortunate first half goal but were then kept at bay by a brilliant goalkeeping display by Kyle Hayes who broke the Glassboys' hearts.

A late arrival and a delayed start failed to throw Shildon out of their stride as they had the better of opening exchanges.

Stourbridge finally started to apply pressure without really threatening before being stunned on 34 minutes when Shildon snatched the lead.

There seemed little danger when Shildon won a throw-in deep inside Stourbridge's half, but Ben Wood turned sharply and had time and space to fire a shot which deflected into the net past a flat-footed Dean Coleman.

Wood could have added a second goal on the stroke of half time, but shot straight at a grateful Coleman when clean through.

Glassboys boss Gary Hackett rang the changes at half time bringing on Jordan Fitzpatrick and Kristian Ramsey-Dickson.

They looked a different side from the word go and promptly bombarded Shildon's goal for the opening 10 minutes, but couldn't find a way past Hayes.

Twice in as many minutes Hayes kept out goalbound headers from Will Richards as Stourbridge looked to turn the screw.

Heroic Hayes then got down to make a last-ditch save to keep out Kayelden Brown.

Ben Billingham then squared the ball across the face of goal on 54 minutes - but Brown couldn't connect.

Hayes then pulled off his best save of the lot on 55 minutes when acrobatically turning a swerving goalbound shot from Billingham round the post.

Stourbridge were made to pay for this series of missed chances.

Striker Paul Connor should have put the issue out of sight just after the hour when put in the clear by Wood, yet with only Coleman to beat, fired straight at the goalkeeper.

However, the killer blow was to arrive soon after on 74 minutes.

Stourbridge conceded a weak free kick which substitute John Brackstone crossed into the Glassboys'goalmouth where Wood was allowed to fire home at the second attempt.

The goal knocked the stuffing out of Stourbridge, who never really looked like repairing the damage.
