HALESOWEN’S Jordanne Whiley gained her first wheelchair tennis trophy of 2015 when she partnered Japan’s Yui Kamiji to finish runners-up in the women’s doubles at the Sydney International Open

The event is the first of six Super Series events that will take place during the year.

The winners of all four Grand Slam doubles titles in 2014, Whiley and Kamiji dropped just one game en route to the final in Sydney before being edged out in three sets by Dutch duo Jiske Griffioen and Aniek van Koot.

Kamiji and Whiley beat Griffioen and van Koot in either a third and final set or a deciding championship tie-break in their finals at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open in New York last year.

Although Kamiji and Whiley took their opponents to a decider one again, Griffioen and van Koot just had the edge this time and clinched a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 victory as Whiley and Kamiji finished runners-up in Sydney for the second successive year.

The two partnerships could meet again at the Australian Open, when the first wheelchair tennis Grand Slam of 2015 takes place at Melbourne Park on January 28 and 31.

“Obviously I am disappointed that we lost the final, neither Yui nor I played like we can, but we now know what we need to do to win the Australian Open," said Whiley. "Congratulations to Jiske and Aniek, they certainly played the better tennis.

The British Number One and world Number Five, who ended 2014 by beating Kamiji twice en route to a career best third place finish at the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters in London in November, also met Japan’s world Number One in the women’s singles semi-finals in Sydney.

However, despite Whiley making a good start to the contest, Kamiji eventually went to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory.
