HALESOWEN'S wheelchair tennis star Jordanne Whiley has won her first singles title of 2015.

She claimed the ITF 2 USN Arena Bolton Indoor singles title with a comprehensive 6-2, 6-1 win over fellow Briton Louise Hunt.

World number five Whiley, who in January won her fifth consecutive Grand Slam doubles title at the Australian Open with Japanese partner Yui Kamiji, came through a tough battle against British number two Lucy Shuker in the semi-finals last Friday, but was always in control during Saturday’s final against Hunt to take the title in two sets.

There was further success for Whiley as she also added the women’s doubles title to her singles crown.

Partnering her 2012 Paralympic bronze medal winning partner Lucy Shuker, they defeated Louise Hunt and German Katharina Kruger 6-2, 6-2 to successfully defend their title from 2014.

Whiley, one of 17 players on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme, made history in 2014 when she became the first British tennis player ever to win a calendar grand slam when she won all four women’s doubles majors with her partner Yui Kamiji.

“It was really good to win my first singles title of the year,” said Whiley. “I am pleased that so many girls took part in the tournament which is really encouraging for the continued growth of wheelchair tennis.

“I would like to thank the organisers and all the volunteers who helped make the tournament such a success and I look forward to returning to Bolton next year to defend both titles."
