DUDLEY Kingswinford’s game against Hereford last Saturday became a tale of two pitches after injury to full back James Jefferson.

The contest ended 16-16 at Heathbrook but it was a head injury to Jefferson, known as Speedy, and his subsequent treatment that proved the talking point.

A collision between him and a Hereford players midway through the second period left the DK man unconscious and convulsing on the turf.

He was quickly helped by medical staff before being assisted to the dugout.

The game restarted with DK settling quicker after the break and suddenly the home forwards won quick ball and the DK backs were able to send Stef Shillingford through a gap for a try to take DK into a 14-13 lead.

However, before the conversion could be taken, a quick response ambulance arrived and drove onto the pitch to the dugout to provide assistance. Two more ambulances then arrived.

The break resulted in the referee moving the action to the adjacent pitch to allow treatment for Jefferson without interruption.

The game restarted with Duncan Tompkins kicking the conversion to give DK a 16-13 lead.

Jefferson was taken to hospital for assessment before being given the all clear by doctors.

Meanwhile, it was a lead that was to be cut just before the end when Morgan Goodall landed a penalty to level matters.

“It is a case of one that got away,” said director of rugby Neil Shillingford. “We played well but again failed to finish our moves.

"The statistics would have been in our favour because we must have had 75 per cent of the play and 60 per cent of possession and territory.

“I think a little bit of indiscipline crept in again and we gave away penalties at crucial moments.

“They were strong in defence and when we did break the lines, we just failed to get enough support there in time.

“Overall I think we should have won it but we just need that bit of luck to go our way.

"You can see the things we are working on are starting to come off.”

DK go to Kenilworth this Saturday still looking for their first away win.

“We now need to focus on that first win on the road this Saturday,” added Shillingford. “That will be a big step for us, especially looking ahead to the second half of the season.”
