CHARLOTTE Bardsley earned singles silver and bronze medals at the Cadet and Junior National Championships.

Seeded second in the Cadet event, the starlet from Stourbridge made top seed and defending champion Denise Payet fight all the way to win 4-2 (11-6, 3-11, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8) in a match characterised by some impressive and long rallies.

Bardsley said: “I thought it was quite close but Denise played really well. Maybe I can win it next year.”

In the older age group Junior girls’ singles, Bardsley reached the semi-finals to earn a bronze medal.

But she found Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tin-Tin Ho, the eventual champion, in irresistible form and was beaten 4-0 in their clash.

There was a bonus, however, when 13-year-old Bardsley, who attends Heathfield School in Wolverley, was part of the Burton Uxbridge squad which won the team competition, which was a test event this year.

Burton narrowly beat Grantham 3-2 in the final.

Meanwhile, in the Junior girls’ doubles event, Bardsley and Isabelle Joubeily were eliminated in the quarter-finals, and in the Cadet girls’ doubles, Bardsley and Danielle Kelly were knocked out in the semi-finals – no bronze medals were awarded in the doubles.
