PEDMORE Technology College student Alex Barker rode in his Halesowen Athletics and Cycling Club colours at the recent five-day stage race in the Netherlands.

The initial time trial saw the 12-year-old in third place overall.

The following day’s racing started with a criterium in Lierop over an 11-mile distance, with Barker claiming first place in a bunch sprint.

His performance in the three-mile time trial later that day secured the yellow jersey, which he retained over the next three days and four races, including the 15-mile Classic Road Race, in which he secured third place.

Wins in the subsequent time trials and races over the next several days enabled the youngster to defend his jersey and complete the tour by securing fourth place in a rain-soaked Someren town centre circuit race over treacherous cobble stones.

Barker was presented with his champion’s jersey and trophy the following day at the ceremony which saw his sister Danielle, from Pedmore Church of England Primary School, presented with a trophy having secured second place in her age category.
