WOLLASTON Lawn Tennis Club celebrated four decades of their popular jubilee tournament this weekend.

The club started a mixed competition to celebrate the Queens Silver Jubilee in 1977, and as a way of encouraging as many as possible to play, it was run as a handicap tournament.

In all the years since, the competition has been held around Wimbledon time, and the entry fee has been increased by 1p per year, with this year's fee being 40p.

Tournament organiser John Cutler said the spirit of the tournament "lives on" as plenty of Union Jacks were flying throughout the weekend, as the event was held in good weather.

All players played in a variety of red, white and blue outfits, with an excellent entry received from both leading team players and members who have only been playing for just two years.

The final was contested between Shaun Ryder and Annabel Kuligowski playing Graham Whyley and Joan Bowles, with Shaun and Annabel taking the 2017 title.

After a bubbly toast to the Queen and presentation of trophies, an afternoon tea was enjoyed at a very traditional afternoon of club tennis.
