STOURBRIDGE'S Sam Eggington made a successful debut at super-welterweight with a second round stoppage of Achilles Szabo.

The former European welterweight champ stepped up to 154lb for the first time on Saturday on the undercard of Amir Khan's clash with Phil Lo Greco at Liverpool's Echo Arena, live on Sky Sports.

Eggington was quickly onto the front foot in the first round and enjoyed success with shots to the body of his Hungarian opponent.

He continued the onslaught in the second round, flooring Szabo twice before the referee stepped in to call a halt to the action.

First it was a sharp right to the body that did the damage before a left hook to head saw another count in quick succession. Smelling blood, the Savage kept the heat on to force the stoppage.

Speaking after the victory, he said: "I can't exaggerate enough how much the seven pounds means to me.

"It's a double edged sword. If I want to do anything I have to get him out, but then I have to get the rounds in at the weight.

"I'm happy with what I've got and can push on from here."

On his future prospects in the new weight division, he added: "The top ten light-middleweights are all decent but I want to try and go the international route.

"There are some big domestic fights to do that as well but some of them are not what I'm after. So I'd like to go the international route and try and pick up a world ranking and a big fight, maybe in different countries.

"We'll see what happens but I'm just happy to get this one out the way."
