Weaver’s wonder strike has Lye purring
3:00pm Thursday 1st November 2012 in Sport
LYE Town are still talking about Steve Weaver’s wonderful winning goal at Wellington Amateurs this week.
Weaver left it late, three minutes into stoppage time, when he flicked the ball over a Wellington defender and controlled it on his chest before slamming home into the net.
Joint-manager Martin Thomas said: “It was a goal worthy of winning any match.”
Weaver has really made his mark since joining Lye this season having only previously played Sunday morning football in Wolverhampton.
Thomas added: “He was a West Bromwich Albion season ticket holder for many years but suddenly decided he wanted to play at a higher level on Saturday.”
Weaver is among a number of new recruits at Lye this term that includes leading marksman Ricky Anslow and Robbie Sheffield who both arrived at Stourbridge Road from AFC Wulfrunians.
Added to that is former Chasetown and Hednesford player Ben Jevons who previously played under Thomas and managerial partner Darren Goodall at Shifnal Town.
Teenager Reece Shilvock, son of former Kidderminster Harrier Steve Shilvock, had opened Lye’s account at Wellington before the hosts hit back to take a 2-1 lead.
Another Anslow goal in the second period levelled matters before Weaver’s wonder goal sealed the points with just two minutes of stoppage time remaining.
The win consolidates Lye’s third placing which they’ll look to improve upon this Saturday when they host Herefordshire side Wellington.
