A BLOCKBUSTER British title clash between Rowley Regis welterweight Jason Welborn and champion Frankie Gavin could happen in the new year.
Welborn’s manager Errol Johnson and Frank Warren’s matchmaker Dean Powell have had discussions over a bumper Black Country v Birmingham derby clash, with Wolverhampton Civic Hall the likely venue if the British Board of Control approve the bout.
Midland champion Welborn has impressed in defences against James Flinn and Scott Haywood while Gavin, Britain’s only amateur world champion, recently claimed the British title by beating veteran Junior Witter.
The Birmingham fighter, nicknamed ‘Fun-time Frankie’, has long been touted as a future world champion but Welborn feels he has the tools to pull off a shock.
He said: “If I fight Frankie I’ll be fighting to win.
“He’s a great boxer and I really like his style, I know him to talk to outside the ring and we get on well.
“But business is business and if I get my chance I’m ready to take it.
“Nothing has been signed and sealed yet but discussions have taken place.
“They are keen on a fight in the Midlands and if it happens it’s likely to be in January.”
Before he can turn his attentions to Gavin, Welborn must first get past Lithuanian Jan Balogh when the two meet in a ten rounder at the Civic on November 30.
It’s the first action for the Rowley Regis man since his fifth-round stoppage of Haywood in June.
Welborn added: “The last few fights have done me a lot of good.
“People have seen what I’m capable of and I’ve also shown myself what I’m capable of.
“They have all been good, experienced boxers and I’ve come out of the fights well.
“I can’t afford to get carried away, all my focus is on the 30th before I think about anything else.”
Welborn’s fight tops the bill of a show which also features the second professional fight for light-heavyweight Ricky Summers, who has recently spent time sparring IBF super-middleweight champion Carl Froch.
Bromsgrove middleweight Andrew Robinson and Dudley debutant Luke Paddock are also in action.
