New skipper Morris in Heathens title vow
5:37pm Wednesday 30th January 2013 in Sport
TALENTED teenager Ashley Morris says Heathens have what it takes to go one better than last year when the season starts in March.
Morris has been handed the captaincy of the former Cradley club following the departure of Adam Roynon and was handed the number one race jacket by outgoing skipper at a function last week.
The Wolverhampton native knows how tough it’s going to be as he doubles-up with Premier League Workington — and he’s up for the challenge.
He said: “I’m happy to be back.
“Obviously it’s going to be a big year for me with Workington and Dudley — where I am number one and captain.
“I’m looking forward to it and I can’t wait for the season to start.
“I normally manage to deal with pressure well. I know there will be more, but I’ll carry on as usual and it should be OK.
“I want to keep the lads spirits high all the way through the season and score good points for a number one.
“If I’m doing that then that’s all that counts really.
“It will spur me on obviously having some guys like Lewis Blackbird chasing me for my number one spot. It will be a challenge but I’m definitely planning on keeping it for the whole season.”
Morris will be joined in the side by Dan Greenwood, Gareth Isherwood, Paul Starke, Lewis Blackbird, Max Clegg and Nathan Greaves.
Only Morris and Greenwood are survivors from the rampant 2012 team which had to be decimated due to averages limitations. But the captain is confident they can go one better and lift the title.
He said: “It looks like it will be a good team. Hopefully we will have a good atmosphere like we had last year, and if we have that then I think it could be key.
“I’ll give the youngsters at reserve as much help as I can as well.
“Obviously I was where they are only a couple of years ago, so I’d like to think I can help them to do well. They look like they’ve got good potential, so we’ll see how it goes.”
“Everyone is aiming for the league title.
“I just hope we can pull it off this time.”
