BLACK Country Rangers embarked on a trip to Derbyshire this week where they were treated to a wonder goal by Josef Jakob.
Rangers renewed acquaintences with Holbrooke Sports, who are based near Matlock and knocked their visitors out of last season’s FA Vase.
Despite travelling with a much depleted squad, Rangers still managed to reel off a 2-1 win with Jakob’s bicycle-kick goal the main talking point.
Rangers boss Paul Garner said: “It was like something from Match of the Day. “It was a bicycle kick that left everyone gobsmacked.” Central defender Jamie Herdman supplied the winner after Holbrooke had taken the lead.
Garner has since signed 19-year-old midfield player Jamie Hunt, who was previously with Aston villa as a youngster, following his display at Holbrooke.
Rangers also have prolific striker Steve Bowes back up and running following a season long injury and will soon by vying for a place in attack along with Jakob, Paul Oakley and Andy Price.
Rangers visit Evo-Stick Division One South side Market Drayton this Saturday.
n Gornal Athletic gave themselves a real shot in the arm after holding last season’s West Midlands League runners-up Lye Town to a 1-1 draw Manager Brian Knight brought in six new faces for the game including recent capture Craig Mowlem from Pelsall Villa and Matt Grainger, who was previously with Kidderminster Harriers youth side.
Knight said: “We only had 14 players available, but we could have ended up winning the game as we missed a penalty.”
Knight, who has been forced to completely rebuild the squad this summer after nearly all of last season’s squad followed previous manager Ian Rowe to Tipton Town, will now look to get his side up and running for the Midland Alliance season which starts on Saturday.
Gornal play hosts to Coleshill Town at Garden Walk before travelling to Continental Star on Tuesday.
