BLACK Country Rangers could hardly believe it when they turned up to play Market Drayton Town in a pre-season friendly last Saturday.
The Tividale-based side found themselves lining up against former France international and Premiership star Pascal Chimbonda.
The ex-Tottenham, Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, QPR and Blackburn Rovers defender is currently training with Market Drayton following his release from SkyBet Championship side Doncaster Rovers.
Chimbonda, who won his solitary cap for his country in 2006 when coming on as a late substitute against Denmark, has found his way to Market Drayton because Chris Hutchings is assistant manager at the Shropshire side and worked with the 34-year-old Frenchman when they were at together Wigan.
Rangers boss Paul Garner said: “It was a priviledge to be on the pitch with Pascal.
“He was a really nice bloke and we all had our pictures taken with him afterwards — even Andy Price, who’d kicked him a couple of times!”
To make the occasion all the more sweeter, Rangers went onto win 3-2 thanks to a Josef Jacob hat-trick, two of which arrived from the penalty spot.
Garner added: “I couldn’t have been prouder of the lads. “I’ve kept everything from the game down to the teamsheet. It’s something I will treasure!”
