Stour reap reward from brutal summer training schedule

STOURBRIDGE gave their pre-season prospects a real shot-in-the-arm after securing a 30-10 success at Swansea.
Reports of a brutal summer training schedule appeared founded as Stour surprisingly finished this contest as much the stronger side.
Director of rugby Neil Mitchell said: “Despite playing against a side who are effectively two levels higher than us, we were on fire towards the end, while it was Swansea who were struggling with the physical aspects.
“I know it’s very early days, but I don’t think Swansea thought they were going to be on the wrong end of a 30-10 loss.
“Everyone of my players stepped up to the mark and I’ve got competition for every single position. I don’t think I’ve ever had that before.”
Ben Barkley opened the scoring for Stour, but there was little indication of what was to come as the famous All Whites responded with two tries of their own to lead 10-5 after the first 30 minute period.
Both squads made extensive changes and from that point, Stour started to take charge.
Ash Oyekan finished off a good passing move to score in the corner before Robbie Hurrell hurled himself over the line after James Rodley had stolen the St Helens’ side’s line-out ball.
Then following a series of drives, Swansea’s flagging defence was pulled out of shape sufficiently for Gary Dipple to step inside and score.
Quickly released ball then set up Rodley for Stour’s fifth try before Sam Baker rounded off the scoring after Stour had won good maul ball.
Stour have another pre-season fixture this Saturday when they entertain Wharfedale at Stourton Park at the earlier time of 2pm.
