It's legs-11 as Lye go goal crazy
1:29pm Thursday 15th August 2013 in Sport
LYE Town left nobody in doubt about their intentions this season after blitzing West Midlands League rivals Bartley Green 11-0 this week.
Having kicked-off the season with a 3-1 win at Willenhall Town last Saturday, Lye went goal crazy as they put a below-par Bartley Green to the sword on Tuesday night.
Steve Weaver and Kieran Bennett both bagged hat-tricks, while further goals from Chris Poyntz, Stuart Ward, Rob Sheffield, Damian Whitcombe and substitute Reece Shilvock only added to Bartley Green’s misery.
Joint-manager Martin Thomas said: “We were 6-0 up by half-time and I told the players that I didn’t want to concede a goal. “That can easily happen when a goalkeeper has nothing to do and goes to sleep.”
More worrying for Lye’s rivals is the fact last season’s leading marksman Ricky Anslow is yet to feature as he continues his recovery from injury.
Thomas added: “He was sitting there squirming about during the Bartley Green game. “He can’t wait to get back in the action.”
Lye can expect a tougher test this Saturday when they travel face Herefordshire-based Midland Alliance side Westfields in the FA Cup.
The Stourbridge Road side have also added two goalkeepers to their ranks.
Jake James has arrived on loan from Chasetown, while Aaron Gayle, son of former Blues goalkeeper Mark Gayle, has also been recruited.
