Heathens Foursome crowned champions
4:20pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Sport
HEATHENS boss Will Pottinger has paid tribute to his side after seeing them win the National League Fours title.
The former Cradley club triumphed in the most dramatic of circumstances with Lewis Blackbird fending off Kent man Steve Boxall in a nervy last heat decider to give his side glory.
The victory was just the latest addition to a growing collection of trophies for Dudley who are enjoying a fine season in 2013.
Yet Pottinger is now desperate to ensure his team continue their excellent form to challenge for more National League honours at the end of the season.
Pottinger said: “We’re absolutely over the moon to win the Fours, especially in such dramatic circumstances.
“It was a great team effort from all the riders and mechanics to give us another trophy along with the Pairs and the Shield earlier in the season.
“It’s days like this that make all the work we put in worthwhile.
“Gareth (Isherwood) had trouble after trashing his bike in his first ride of the semi-final, but everyone chipped in to help him out and get him out again on Lewis’ spare bike.
“It was a superb effort by Lewis in the last race against Steve Boxall is one of the best riders in the league.
“He was coming at him at all angles but Lewis did a tremendous job to hold him off and that feeling when he crossed the line was incredible for all of us after what was a long, tough day.
“Things are developing now with all the trophies, but we can’t take anything for granted in the league.
“There is a bit of expectation now which wasn’t there at the start, but we’ve just got to concentrate to make sure we are in the play-offs in the league which is the main objective.
“Things are going really well right now but we can’t get complacent and we need to keep our form going.”
Heathens head into a busy spell this weekend with a trip to Buxton on Sunday, Kent on Monday before their next home meeting on Tuesday against the Isle of Wight.
