Welborn looking to master Maxwell
4:27pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Sport
ROWLEY Regis boxer Jason Welborn bids to add another title to his collection early next month when he faces Birmingham’s Max Maxwell for the British Masters light-middleweight crown at Walsall Town Hall.
The fight takes place on September 7 when Welborn believes a win will get his career back on track following defeat to British welterweight champion Frankie Gavin.
Welborn is eager to get a crack at either the British or Commonwealth light-middleweight title before the end of the year but realises he must dispose of Maxwell in some style to get his wish.
He said: “Max has fought for British title in the past and is more experienced than me. But if I’m going to get anywhere at this level, then I have to beat him.
“I was never comfortable fighting at welterweight. Even though I won the Midlands title and defended it twice, I always felt weak.
“I was finding it harder to make the weight and I felt it was affecting my immune system.
“Now that I’m stepping up a weight, I feel much better. I was struggling to make 10 stone seven. I feel I’ll come in to my own at light middleweight.”
