Morris 'led from the front' to inspire Heathens

HEATHENS Club partner and co-promoter Gary Patchett has paid tribute to everyone involved in securing the 2013 National League Title at King’s Lynn last night.
Gary said: “Obviously, first and foremost I must praise our fantastic team who have been absolutely outstanding all season. They have been superbly led form the front by captain Ashley Morris, who on a personal note only dropped two points over the two legs of the Final.
“All of the riders have shown tremendous professionalism and dedication to the cause that will serve them well in their professional careers that most, if not all, will undoubtedly achieve in the fullness of time. That we have retained the same seven riders that started the season is a testament to the telling contributions that each and every one of them have made during the course of the season, but we should not forget the efforts made by those who have guested for us when called upon.
“They have all been a pleasure to work with and I take great pride from the fact that we were able to assemble such a fantastic team for this season despite only being able to retain two riders from last year.
“The title is just recognition for the work that so many people put in behind the scenes and I would like to take the opportunity to place my thanks on record here. “Our Chairman, Nigel Pearson, fronts the club and is ably assisted by a Press Office that produces our matchday programme and website that are surely the envy of the sport.
“The riders have been indebted to the assistance and mechanical knowledge given to them by Graham (Jonah) Jones who I believe was very close to shedding a tear last night.
Team Manager, Will Pottinger, puts his Heathens duties ahead of everything else and his passion for the club is there for all to see. A special mention too must go to Club President, Colin Pratt, who has a great Heathens heritage and has given Will great support during the course of the season.
“Without the continued support of Chris Van Straaten our club would be without a track. It’s as simple as that. I’m sure I speak for each and every Heathen when I send my very sincere thanks to him and all of his Monmore Wood staff that make the Heathens welcome. Having brought some overdue success to the Borough of Dudley in our fourth year of racing there could not now be a more appropriate time for the club to receive the recognition that we surely deserve and to finally secure a home that we can call our own.
“Credit must again be given to the efforts made by all the members of HSSC and CRASH during the dark years in the speedway wilderness to keep the memory of the club alive. Without that unstinting effort over a dozen or more years I doubt that we would even be sat here today all grinning like the proverbial Cheshire cats!
“Last but not least I must pay tribute to the fantastic support that we receive both home and away from the ‘Wood’. You are the only reason the club continues to thrive and you come in ever increasing numbers and support your team through thick and thin. I make no exception when I say that you are the most passionate supporters in the sport and that was never better demonstrated than last night at King’s Lynn when there must have been 400 travelling Heathens there to witness our historic victory. “We ‘ommered um’ didn’t we?”
