LYE Town missed out on taking over top spot in the West Midlands League by a single goal after they blitzed whipping boys Bustleholme 6-0.
Ricky Anslow made his first start of the season and responded with two goals, but it was defender Damian Whitcombe who stole the show by netting four times.
All Whitcombe’s strikes arrived from set-piece play as he converted from two corners, a penalty plus a sublime free-kick which proved the goal of the game.
Joint Lye town boss Martin Thomas said: “We were told how another goal would have taken us top afterwards, but I don’t look at it that way. We got the win, we kept a clean sheet and the rest is a bonus!
“Credit to Bustleholme who are much better side than they were at the start of the season.”
Lye travel to Shropshire side Ellesmere Rangers this Saturday and Thomas is keeping his fingers crossed the players don’t suffer any ill effects from the club’s Golf Day in Bewdley which takes place the previous day.
