More success for Jordanne Whiley
11:31am Thursday 27th March 2014 in Sport
HALESOWEN'S Jordanne Whiley will bid for back-to-back series titles on the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Tour at this week’s Pensacola Open in America.
She is looking for more success after securing victory in the women's doubles at the Cajun Classic in Baton Rouge last weekend.
British number one Whiley won her second doubles title partnering South Africa’s Kgothatso Montjane and was also a quarter-finalist in the women’s singles in Louisiana.
Whiley and Montjane, whose first title also came in the USA last September when they won the USTA Championships Super Series title, claimed a thrilling victory in Baton Rouge in a final that also featured Whiley’s London 2012 bronze medal-winning partner Lucy Shuker.
The top seeds beat Shuker and Germany’s Sabine Ellerbrock, the third seeds, 7-6(3), 3-6, (11-9) after a deciding championship tie-break, with Whiley winning her fourth successive doubles title this season. Whiley and Montjane dropped just six games in two matches en route to the final.
World number six Whiley was fifth seed for the women’s singles contest and opened her campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over American Emmy Kaiser before taking German world number one Ellerbrock to three sets in the quarter-finals, but Ellerbrock prevailed 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-2 en route to the final.
“I’m very pleased to get my American tournaments off to a great start with a title under my belt. It was a tight match, but me and KG play well together and we needed to play well to win that final,” said Whiley. “After back-to-back tournaments in the UK last month, this my first set of tournaments overseas playing in my new tennis chair I got after the Australian Open, so I’m also very encouraged to get close to Sabine and am looking forward to the challenges in Pensacola.”
Whiley is now among six Brits on the Tennis Foundation’s Wheelchair Tennis Performance Programme contesting this week’s Pensacola Open in Florida.
