OLD Halesonians RFC's future is looking bright after this season's emergence of a strong under 14 side.

With the Hales first team performing well during their first season competing in national level rugby, the grass roots side of the club has also flourished.

The start of the campaign saw the arrival of a new head coach in Matthew Williams. He was tasked with the clear aim of developing and supporting a squad that was under threat of going under with just four players.

The season eventually started with a squad of 15 players and through hard graft and support, the squad now boasts 20 dedicated players.

Williams has nothing but positive comments to make regarding the season and the ambitious targets for next year.

He said: “The parents and the players have worked so hard to recruit players from local schools and it’s a pleasure to work with such a talented and dedicated set of lads that are a compliment to themselves and their parents.

“ It was always going to be a challenge to recruit new players to the club but I am so glad that all the work has paid off and look forward to increasing the squad to 25 players over the next year so we can be more competitive for places and cover any injuries or player unavailability."

Key successes for the young side during the 2013/14 season include making it to the second round of the North Midlands Cup and a shining performance at an under 14 festival in Bournemouth. The team came out on top after going undefeated and running in an impressive 40 tries in eight games.

"It’s the thanks, praise and clear enjoyment of the players that motivates us as coaches to ensure that the fun, excitement and values this sport has given to us can be passed on for years to come," added Williams.
